LEJOG for Sane People

The Route

So where did we actually go? Here is an ugly visual approximation.

Here is a list of the places we slept in:

  • Penzance
  • Tintagel
  • Dulverton
  • Bristol
  • Edinburgh
  • Perth
  • Inverness
  • Altnaharra
  • John O’Groats

I am not sure why you are reading this page but I can guess.

If you are a casual reader who’s just interested in visiting the UK, we can thoroughly recommend the southwest (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset) and also Scotland. We basically liked most of the places we slept except for Bristol. But that isn’t to say you should visit those places, or that you should not go to Bristol. We did not spend much time in any one place.

If you are a cyclist who wants to do LEJOG, we think you should design your own route. We did most of our route planning the night before the next day’s ride, and we booked hotels on the same day we planned to stay there (usually at or after lunch). Part of the adventure on a trip like this is being surprised by the places you end up in; if you plan every single detail in advance you may end up knowing too much about where you are going. But this is up to you of course.

If you are someone who’s interested in our route for other reasons, like if you want specific stats (speed, etc.) then if you know one of us you can ask us for those details. No point to share them on the website, probably. Generally we averaged ~11 to 16 mph and did ~80 miles a day.
